Dear Friends,
We have just heard sad news of the demise of Echo from Cynthia Moss of the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. Echo died on the 2nd of May from old age and the drought. I personally met Echo and others in the her family many times in Amboseli - she was easy to identify by her crossed tusks. She was a fierce protector of her family, builting it up from 7 individuals to 40 over the years. She and her family starred of the documentary Echo of the Elephants. If you haven’t seen it then you simply must. It is unforgettable.

Light a candle for Echo.
I can’t believe she is gone. Amboseli will never be the same.
RIP Echo.
Paula

You’re right she meant so much to so many of us, she ignited the interest in these magnificent animals around the world in just being herself and looking after her family, raising her calves, showing us her wisdom, dedication and compassion. I was lucky enough to spend over an hour with her and her family (little Esprit always so close to her and still suckling) in the beginning of March this year and saw for myself the terrible drought that has plagued the area for years now, the rains came too late for her this April. Hopefully one of her daughters (or even Eudora) will pick up the mantel and carry her legacy on. Echo will never be forgotten and she was a torch bearer for her kind and there could not have been a better one.

I am deeply saddened that Echo left us. She seemed such an icon living on forever.
The few hours I was fortunate to spent in her presence will be stored in precious memory.
She was a model mom - just a great lady! Humans learned a lot about elephant society
from observing this magnificent matriarch.
May you rest in peace - you will never be forgotten

I am extremely sad to hear of the death of Echo.
But it is wonderful to know that she lived out her life naturally and died of natural causes.
Rest in peace Echo.
