Ivory demand and China
Category: Ivory, elephants | Date: Jul 12 2008 | By: baraza
Why is there such a massive demand for ivory? Is this is the kind of crap that people want ivory for?
It just doesn’t make sense does it?
There are some very well through through recommendations developed by a group of NGO’s called the Species Survival Network on the decision before the CITES Standing Committee on the issue of allowing China to buy ivory.
You can get their full analysis on all issues under debate at the Standing Committee here

I hate the way people around the world participate in all kinds of activities that influence the killing of wildlife of all sizes, not just elephants. Some day I hope a new generation can succeed in stopping all this madness. Until then we need to take every opportunity to speak out against it and your statement “is this the kind of crap people want ivory for?” is most appropriate.

I continually try to refrain from falling into the “China bashing” mode, but day after day it gets harder not to cave in to my gut frustrations on the matter. From backing the genocidal government of Sudan, to blocking sanctions against Robert Mugabe, from producing lead laden toys and toxic pet food, to participating in the highest trafficking in endangered wildlife worldwide, from pouring coal fired greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere to their dismal status as the highest rate of annual executions in the world, the dragon seems to have its teeth dug into some of the world’s most pressing problems of late. The worst part of it all is that the Chinese government doesn’t seem to care what anyone else in the world thinks about these issues. I expect the ivory issue will be no different. China is digging into Africa to take up where the European colonialists left off. We can’t resolve any of these issues without China’s participation. That makes for some difficult days ahead. How do we convince them that rhino horn is just common hair with no aphrodesiac properties? Or bear gaul bladder? How do we get them to take tiger paw soup off the menu? We expect better from such an educated populace and a government that has led the way on saving and conserving the critically endangered Panda Bear, the animal symbol of their nation. We need to get the Chinese people and government as a whole to apply the same level of reasoning they give to their own pandas, to species such as elephants, rhinos, bears, and tigers in other parts of the world. That is the only way to cut the demand and save the elephants. As for the ivory covered cell phone…sick! I wonder…would they still buy it if the blood stains of the host hadn’t been polished off. One word…Ecocide! -TheTeach

Hurray for your comments!!!!! I share your sentiments exactly! China is the new Babylon and nobody will stop them until it is too late. One nation is destroying the whole planet.
